Citing the United States, where hospitals are obliged to mention to parents the option of storing their newborn's cord blood, Deputy Shatter, who is a solicitor, warned that there could be legal liability in the future that the HSE and public hospitals prevented patients from undergoing the process.

U.S. Congresswoman Jackie Speier who represents California’s 12th District, introduced the Cord Blood Education and Awareness Act, a federal bill that directs the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to conduct an education campaign on cord blood stem cells so that every pregnant woman can make a more informed decision about cord blood banking.

AHMEDABAD: A year ago, Rishi was a severely ill thalassemia major patient, with A-positive blood group. A year later, he is a healthy 13-kg cherubic child but his blood group has changed to B-positive!  The change in his blood group is in fact proof that Rishi’s surgery, the country’s first stem cell transplant from umbilical cord blood of a stranger child received from a private bank, has worked. This is the first such successful experiment in the country which will now help two-and-a-half-year-old Rishi Bhanushali live without frequent blood transfusions.

Dr. Oz talks about the value of using cells “with your own genes” and provided counterpoints to the argument that embryonic stem cells are necessary for medical advancements in diseases like Parkinson’s.    Dr. Oz believes that researchers have made 10 years of advances in the past year (referring to the discovery of iPS cells from skin cells), and estimates we are single digit years away from being able to apply this research to patients with Parkinson’s, diabetes, and heart disease.

Dylan Cain, 4,  will be participating in a stem cell infusion from his own umbilical cord blood stem cells saved by his parents at birth. This procedure will be performed by Duke University's School of Medicine and is part of a growing push to use cord blood stem stells in regenerative medicine.

The Cord Blood Registry (CBR) has put it's support forward to a recent bill proposed in the House of Representatives. This congressional piece of legislation "will amend the IRS Code to allow individuals and couples to use tax advantaged dollars to pay for umbilical cord blood banking services through flexible spending accounts (FSAs), health savings accounts (HSAs), health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs) or the medical expenses tax deduction."
